Yoga Psychotherapy is a holistic, body-centered approach to mental health that integrates traditional psychotherapy with the principles and practices of yoga therapy. Rather than relying solely on talk-based methods, Yoga Psychotherapy brings the body into the therapeutic process — using breath work, somatic awareness, gentle movement, and mindfulness to support nervous system regulation, emotional processing, and lasting change.
This approach is grounded in the understanding that our thoughts, emotions, and patterns of behavior are deeply connected to our physical experience. Stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma often show up not just in the mind but in the body — through tension, shallow breathing, disrupted sleep, or a sense of disconnection. Yoga Psychotherapy works with these signals directly, helping clients develop greater awareness and capacity for self-regulation in real time.
At Positive Counseling Center, Yoga Psychotherapy is informed by evidence-based frameworks including the Neuro-Affective Relational Model (NARM), Somatic Psychology, Polyvagal Theory, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Sessions are collaborative and consent-based, honoring each client's pace, preferences, and lived experience. The emphasis is not on athletic performance or flexibility, but on safety, agency, and building a new relationship with your body as a resource for healing.
Yoga Psychotherapy may be a good fit if you are navigating anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, chronic stress, life transitions, or if you're seeking a therapeutic approach that goes beyond words to include the wisdom of the body.
